Zoe Lewis appointed Principal / Chief Executive at Middlesbrough College

MIDDLESBROUGH College has appointed a new Principal / Chief Executive – Zoe Lewis.

Zoe, formerly Deputy Principal, takes over the role with immediate effect after the recent announcement that Mike Hopkins, former Principal / Chief Executive, was to become Group Chief Executive at the newly-created Confederation between Middlesbrough College and Gateshead College.

Zoe – Middlesbrough College’s first female Principal / Chief Executive – will continue to drive forward the vision she helped shape with Mike and the wider management team.

That vision includes ensuring Middlesbrough College – with a turnover of £32m - continues to be the biggest and best provider of post-16 education in the Tees Valley, delivering skills training for today and the future, by listening to and responding to the needs of employers across the region.

To ensure the vision is realised, the College is investing £20m in a STEM Centre of Excellence (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) alongside a new Engineering Training Centre, as well as an extension to MC6 - the purpose-built Sixth Form Centre - and a string of other improvements across the campus.

Zoe, 41, said: “It’s a really exciting time for Middlesbrough College and I couldn’t work with a more dedicated, committed and talented team.

“I’m looking forward to leading the College to the next level, by bringing the investment and improvement plans to fruition and by working with our world class staff who will continue to provide the best support and opportunity for our students and ultimately the skills our employers require to support business growth and development.“

Zoe is no stranger to expansion and achievement - she led the £70m capital project that saw the College built at Middlehaven back in 2008.

She was also voted the most inspirational female leader in the country working in further education, by the Women’s Leadership Network in 2012.

The mum-of-two has been a member of the College Leadership Team at Middlesbrough College for eight years, and lives in Stokesley with her husband Craig.

Bob Brady MBE, Chairman Governors, said: “Zoe has been at Middlesbrough College since 2005 and has led with drive, enthusiasm and passion to steer the College to great things under the various leaderships of Mike Hopkins and his predecessor, John Hogg.

“Her commitment and dedication inspires those around her to do the same and the Governing Body is thrilled that she will lead Middlesbrough College into this new chapter.”
